Thulcandra is made up of Stefan Kummerer (Obscura), Seraph (Dark Fortress) as well as Tobias & Sebastian Ludwig (Helfhart) and the end result is mind blowing. Thulcandra’s existence is paved from heavy influences by Dissection & Unanimated and man have they nailed it. Their sound encompasses the infamous Swedish Black Death Metal style of raw aggressive riffs and electrifying melodies. Their second release Under A Frozen sun is a beautiful continuation of Dissection’s legacy and should appeal to fans of the genre. Although I have a few favorite songs on this album (Ritual of Sight, Echoing Voices, Gates of Eden) I have to say they all are brilliantly crafted and nothing short of magical, with complementary melodies and exploding heaviness that will be sure to keep you interested.
One thing I want to make sure of is that these guys are far from a cheap imitation of Dissection. Yes, they acknowledge that they are a tribute band that is reviving Dissection’s signature style but their music is original enough, and should be appreciated for the homage being paid to some great influential bands. If you are one whose musical preferences looks for cutting edge originality look elsewhere, but if you like melodic black metal and can appreciate Thulcandra’s rendition, I think this will impress you.
