Inspired by the Rotting Christ song, The Old Coffin Spirit, guitarist Shatraug combined the German words Sarg (Coffin) and Geist (Spirit) to name his band. Calling Finland home, Sargeist started back in the late ’90’s contributing their musical spin on the black metal genre. They have been apart of 16 releases including 3 full length albums, 3 demos, 2 EP’s and an assortment of comp/split releases.
Their newest release, The Rebirth Of A Cursed Existence is a compilation album featuring 14 remastered songs that were previously only available on tape, vinyl or comp/split releases.
The opening track, Reaping with Curses & Plague, was originally from the 2002 split release with Merrimack. Vocals aside, the music, although subtle, hints at the older goth/punk styles. The song weaves in influences of heavy metal and death metal with vocals styles that are only black metal. As far as black metal goes, minus the works of bands such as Emperor and Dimmu Borgir, Sargeist has a melodic and progressive approach to songwriting.
Track 2 and title track featured on the 2002 Jatkosota – Finnish Dark/Black Metal Compilation album and track 4, Wraith Messiah originating from the 2004 split/vinyl release with Temple of Baal, showcase these songwriting variations. Musically this album is enjoyable and at times it is even fun. Hoath mimics his vocals in the style of Quorthon ( Bathory ). They are disgusting, gritty and monotone at its best. They are spot on with what is expected from a black metal vocalist.
If you had to pick just one album to either show Sargesit to friends or music for a long road trip, The Rebirth Of A Cursed Exsistence would be that album.
