Ramming Speed – Doomed to Destroy, Destined to Die (2013)

DIMMU BORGIR - Eonian

Sometimes a band’s name and album title are so fitting to their sound that it’s almost too perfect. Ramming Speed’s latest release Doomed to Destroy, Destined to Die is just that. With a sound that’s punishing and fast, the name is certainly able to write checks that it can cash. Ramming Speed pull from all over the metal genre spectrum to create their sound. From punk, to d-beat, to thrash, to grind…to even a touch of N.W.O.B.H.M., they’re a melting pot of reverberations.

All (almost) 35 minutes of this album are bludgeoning. The palatability of the guitar sound is heard only seconds into the first track. From there the speed and intensity of the entire band starts to annihilate the ears and cause the head to bang.  ‘Doomed To Destroy, Destined to Die’ is full of chanting moments where you can almost see the barrage of singing along and crowd surfing that would unfold at a live show.

‘Grinding Dissent’ is one of the catchiest songs on the album. From the very beginning the energy of the track will run you over. It’s almost hard to keep up with it. Not only does it have masterful riffing (especially at about 1:03), but the brashness of the vocals getting screamed out will leave you beaten and begging for more. This is definitely ‘one of those tracks’ you’ll find yourself going back to again and again as you spin and re-spin this record.

From there, songs like ‘Anthems of Despair’ chastise with the perfect mix of that crossover sound that leaves you wanting a second helping.  ‘Ministry of Truth’ gets the body moving with intense, catchy rhythms and snaking speeds. ‘The Rhetoric Of Hate And Other Examples of Wildly’ is what hate would sound like if you could put a sound to it. The track just completely takes over, like being taken into capture and beaten to death. ‘Hollow Giants’ slows it down (just a bit) showcasing the wide-ranging talent of the ground these musicians can cover. You really get a chance to hear every facet in this track, and it’ll also give you a second to catch your breath shortly before the album reaches its end with ‘Dead Flags’.

As a whole, every single instrument that comes together on this album acts as an unremitting arsenal of various weaponry. From the drums that act as the grenades exploding to the vocals that shift styles effortlessly and act as canons going off, this record destroys. The dueling guitars act as machine guns and the bass acts like the explosion of a double barrel shotgun or, at times, maybe even the explosion felt stepping on a landmine. Ramming Speed has surely done it right with this sophomore release, pick it up and see for yourself.

Doomed to Destroy, Destined to Die is out on Prosthetic Records on June 25th.
