The Swedish metal commandos Sabaton invaded Tempe, AZ last Thursday February 7th with heavy metal artillery out of their best arsenal, the Arizona crowd was treated with old songs and the new ones out of their new album Carolux Rex.
Not every day you have one of the best live heavy metal bands out there rolling their anthems of war and military greatness into your town. But for our fortune we had that pleasure last week. Sabaton took the stage around 10:30 pm opening with Ghost Division, Gott Mit Uns and Poltava, those last two out of their new album Carolux Rex. The first thing that called my attention was that Snowy Shaw (ex-Therion, Dream Evil & King Diamond) is playing drums with them, which surprised me, but I was glad I got to see him punished the drums, and nail down the Sabaton tunes down to perfection.
After a quick introduction and a reference to the open air venue, which they found really unique, they continue with Swedish Pagans, Carolux Rex and A Lifetime Of War. This last one interpreted in Swedish, which sounded fantastic. I also notice a more fresh and interactive chemistry of the band on stage, as it was different related to the last time I saw Sabaton live a couple of years back. The show continued with songs like The Cliffs Of Gallipoli, 40:1, The Lion From The North,Uprising, Into The Fire, The Art of War, Primo Victoria, and Metal Crue.
Overall it was a fresh show not only because of the new members in the band, the addition of Snowy Shaw on drums, and how great the new material sounds live. But because of all the details Sabaton puts on their live performance, and the interaction and charisma of front man Joakim Broden with the crowd which make their show a must see every time they roll their war anthems into your town .
Here are some of the pictures we took at their show.
The Age Of Metal talked with Pär Sundström (Bass) & Thobbe Englund (Guitars) of Sabaton hours before the show. We talked about the tour, their Grammy nomination, Carolux Rex, their plans for a new DVD and much more.
