Last year when I was at ProgPower USA XIII in Atlanta, GA it was the first time I heard the name Ashes Of Ares, as the band was announced to be on this year’s edition of the festival. What I didn’t understand at the time was, why the crowd cheered non stop during their announcement without an album even out yet?. Well, let’s say that now I understand why such euphoria.
The band formed in 2012 by Matt Barlow (ex-Iced Earth) on vocals, Freddy Vidales (ex-Iced Earth) on guitar, and Val Williams (ex-Nevermore) on drums. Ashes Of Ares is a conglomerated of talent and experience forged within the metal world itself, their music its powerful and dark as if they were chosen by the god of war himself to carry out his will in this chaotic metal world.
The band is the consolidation of an era and the reborn to something new that breaks away from their previous musical experiences, but keeping their passion for metal alive and kicking. Their self-titled debut album will be release in September 6th via Nuclear Blast Records. The album is, energetic, powerful, fast, and interesting to the point that without a doubt it will be on our top 20 list this year. (check out ‘Punishment‘ & ‘Chalice Of Men‘ when the album gets out, you will understand why)
The Age Of Metal had the pleasure to chat with Matt Barlow vocalist of Ashes Of Ares, about their new album, the band’s formation, ProgPower USA XIV, touring, and much more.
