Last week I had the chance to see live the Finnish battle metal band Turisas in full swing, last time they came to town supporting Cradle Of Filth (Feb.2011) I missed half of their set as I got late to the venue that night. This time around it was different as Turisas was headlining the 3rd edition of Paganfest America, a tour that mimic the european version of the tour, but with a different roster every time. Paganfest America in these edition counted with the participation of Huntress (USA), Alestorm (Scotland), Arkona (Russia) and Turisas (Finland) as a headliner. The show in Tempe, AZ was the last of the tour and unfortunately Alestorm and Huntress were not on the bill.
I arrived at the venue around 8:30 pm as local heroes Adavant were finishing their set, after a couple of beers with some friends and a paid visit to the merch booth, I was ready to let my inner-pagan out. Arkona got on stage, and as I was experience them months before, they put up a great show playing a balanced set between material from their latest album Slovo and old material. Masha was super charismatic, and I must add way more energetic than last time.
Turisas hit the stage around 11pm, their set was a mixture between Stand Up And Fight their latest album, and songs from the Varangian Way and Battle Metal. Their had a great energy live, and their show is heavy on its own way, of course their live sound changed a bit with the new members and made it more dynamic, here are the pictures from that night.
Previous to their show we had the pleasure to sit and sum up the tour with Turisas’s vocalist Mathias Nygård. we talked about their experience as a headlining band in Paganfest America, Stand Up And Fight, the line up changes, and the plans for the band.
