You know, it’s been a while since we’ve had a fresh face in the American metal scene that exemplifies the best thing about it: heavy and unrelenting. The most popular ones are ones that have been around for a while, like Lamb of God or even a more underground act like God Forbid. On the other hand of the spectrum, you have American metal bands that either suck or don’t really exemplify the modern mainstream American metal sound, no matter how much I love them.
And then came Battlecross.
Battlecross is fresh, heavy as fuck, and really talented, as well as universally respected. Not many people can claim to tour with a renowned grindcore band (Origin) and then tour with a mega-popular pseudo-metal band (Five Finger Death Punch) on a big stage. That’s pretty extraordinary. And it’s definitely happening to a well-deserving band: their most recent album, Pursuit of Honor, is something that should be listened to, if only to hear something fresh that’s breaking into the mainstream that doesn’t blow.
We had the chance to interview Hiran Deraniyagala, one of the guitarists, during the Trespass America tour. The interview is below.
