Heaven Shall Burn – VETO (2013)

German metal band Heaven Shall Burn released their newest album VETO this year. This album ranked No. 2 in the German Album Charts. This band has definitely stood out from the rest due to their aggressive sound, yet they write positive lyrics against social injustice. The name Heaven Shall Burn is nothing anti-religious; rather, encourages people to not get a false hope of “heaven.” This band hasn’t strayed from this style of songwriting with this new release.

The album opens with a soft guitar intro from the song Godiva. The riff eventually gets heavier as the drums kick in, and then growls from vocalist Marcus Bischoff start off the song.  Land of the Upright Ones is one of the most unique songs off of the album. The complex drumming mixed in with the fast picking really brings the brutality right away. One of the heavier songs off of the album is You Will be Godless. The powerful riffing and fast drumming really makes this song stand out. There is a song cover on every Heaven Shall Burn album. For this one, it’s Blind Guardian’s Valhalla. Heaven Shall Burn’s more aggressive version of Blind Guardian is extremely interesting, and they pull it off very well.

The only thing I didn’t care for about the album was the more melodic approach this band took. They definitely toned down their sound. I was first introduced to this band when they released Iconoclast (Part 1: The Final Resistance). I was attracted to how fast and heavy the band was. The riffs are a lot more catchy and repetitive, something I don’t particularly care for. But nonetheless, I don’t think this element will drive fans away completely from this release.

Heaven Shall Burn has proved to us once again their individualistic style can conquer. Even though they took a slightly new approach to this record, they still have the same songwriting elements as they have had before. Heaven Shall Burn has definitely earned their spot as one of the most recognizable German bands. Fans of this band will definitely appreciate this new release. Heaven Shall Burn will continue to strive. Their message of justice and positivity, with their heavy sound, will always spread.
