#10 CRADLE OF FILTH – THE MANTICORE AND OTHER HORRORS
Cradle Of Filth lost me somewhere after Midian so I was pleased as hell to hear The Manticore And Other Horrors. It has all of the mystery that early Cradle had me hooked with. A frantic orchestration conjuring up monsters and malevolence, wickedness and women. Good necromantic imagery. Everything a Cradle of Filth album should be.
#9 MUNICIPAL WASTE – THE FATAL FEAST
Party music! Complete with ‘You’re Cut Off’ 1.5 minutes dedicated to the asshole that had too much. I really dig this album. Perfect for random moments of violent thrashing out. There is nothing complex or all that smart about it (exception being maybe ‘Standards And Practices’) but, hey, complexity and intelligence ain’t why we listen to Municipal Waste. It KILLS. Head down. Horns up. Enough said.
#8 CANCER BATS – DEAD SET ON LIVING
Something about Dead Set On Living has gotten under my skin. Maybe it’s the sludge spiked awesomeness of songs like ‘The Void’ and ‘New World Alliance’. Maybe it’s the vocalist and his contagious energy. Or maybe it’s just ‘Breathe Armageddon’. The whole album rocks with a hyper urgency and it manages to simultaneously be cryptic and upbeat. I can’t get enough.
#7 PIG DESTROYER – BOOK BURNER
A 5 year break and a new drummer have done nothing to tame the mighty Pig Destroyer. Book Burner has a beat it down and fuck it all up attitude that will not be denied. Songs like ‘The Bug’ make you wanna freak. Kick something over at the very least. It’s great for anger management and a 2 disc Deluxe Edition with a Misfits cover is a major bonus.
#6 GRAVE – ENDLESS PROCESSION OF SOULS
This album reminds me of something that could always be on in the background like some kind of badass soundtrack. It’s all sort of familiar, you know what’s coming and you just close your eyes and say fuck yeah as it grinds on through ten tracks of death metal mastery.
#5 GOATWHORE – BLOOD FOR THE MASTER
Blood For The Master somehow has an oldschool ‘it brings you back’ sound while still remaining fresh. Leave it to some Cajun boys to ditch the cold atmosphere of black metal and spice it up. Yeah, on Blood For The Master they spice it up, light it on fire and burn it to a crisp. Raspy, charismatic vocals, sick riffs and tons of blasphemy. What more do you need?
#4 DYING FETUS – REIGN SUPREME
You get a certain hideous look on your face whenever listening to Dying Fetus. It’s awesome, and Reign Supreme is some of the heaviest technical rage they have ever created. It’s dripping with an almost painful accuracy from beginning to end, the closing riff on the last song being nothing short of perfect.
#3 GOJIRA – L’ENFANT SAUVAGE
Gojira have me wondering. What exactly are they thinking? What drugs did they take.. or forget to take? Is this completely crazy or is this sanity personified? Regardless, I love it. L’Enfant Sauvage (translated to ‘The Wild Child’) takes on a very unique/psychotic brilliance. Powerful riffs. Interesting structure. Trippy to say the least. Something that makes you think and something that definitely deserves respect.
#2 KREATOR – PHANTOM ANTICHRIST
It’s difficult not getting a wicked case of whiplash while listening to Phantom Antichrist. It SHREDS. Every second. Experiments are in the past and this reminds us of what KREATOR is, this is complete and total no bullshit thrash. Angry and relatable through and through. This album will make you want riots and upheaval, this album needs to be heard and it needs to be heard loud!
#1 NAPALM DEATH – UTILITARIAN
2012 was an outstanding year for metal. Of all the kickass releases, Utilitarian stands above. The entire album is solid and diverse, filled with a very real and in your face kind of energy with everything from the freakouts on ‘Everyday Pox’ to the psychedelic guitar and wailing vocals on ‘Leper Colony’. Other songs like ‘The Wolf I Feed’ and ‘Collision Course’ give me what I can only describe as an eargasm. It’s everything I want from Napalm Death. A full on assault to the senses. So addictive. So damn good.
