Tracing Back Roots: a conversation with Max Cavalera

Since the Cavalera brothers left Sepultura there has been a lot of questions, speculation and rumors about a reunion of the original Sepultura line up, and the answers from both sides have been diverse but none of those answers have been positive, at the same time it seems everyone has moved on with their lives and their projects. With that in mind, this year Max & Iggor Cavalera had decided to revisit the seminal Sepultura album Roots which just turned 20 years, and to celebrate it they have created a tour and titled it ‘Return to Roots‘

Return to Roots is essentially Max Cavalera (Vocals/guitar), Iggor Cavalera (drums), Marc Rizzo (Guitar), and Johny Chow (bass) playing the entire Roots album from beginning to end. For the North American package the tour also featured The Black Dahlia Murder, Combichrist, Allegaeon, All Hail the Yeti and ONI. in selected dates along the trail. For the final stop of the tour, they played the annual D-Low memorial show at Club Red in Mesa, AZ.

The line for this special occasion was more like a family gathering as it featured Soulfly, Incite and Lody Kong which all are Cavalera bands as Max‘s sons play on them, so it was more like a local mini metal festival, which was great for a Saturday evening. The place was packed since the doors opened at 4pm and local bands were warming up the stage and the crowd that was growing with every passing hour.

After great performances by ONI, All Hail The Yeti, Lody Kong, Incite and Soulfly, the crowd got anxious about this Roots set. The show opened with the classical Roots Bloody Roots, and seeing Max and Iggor playing together that Sepultura classic was everything you needed to know to realize that this was the closest thing you would get to the real thing (I would say so far, because you never know, please see the Guns N Roses case for a more recent example). The show continued with Attitude, Cut-Throat, Ratamahatta, Breed Apart, Straighthate, Spit, Lookaway, Dusted, Born Stubborn, Jasco, Itsári, Ambush, Endangered Species and Dictatorshit.

What experience this show was, the levels of energy from those on stage and from the crowd that sang their lungs out, moshed out and in general was enjoying a trip down to memory lane with a full set of Sepultura songs played by Max and Iggor. For those that have seen the original line up this was a reviving of a reincarnated memory and for some of us that have never seen the original lineup, it was the closest we could get to the real thing so far.

Overall it was an amazing night of metal and an incredible experience to be able to witness some of this songs live. We caught up with Max a few hours before the show to talk about the tour, the memories from the Roots album process, his plans to take this tour to a Europe and South America, and maybe the chances of seeing a similar treatment to albums like Arise or Chaos A.D.
