The live essence of a band like TYR is their unique music style, their mix of traditional Faroese melodies with metal is what catapulted their career since their very beginning. However, in their new album Valkyrja they twist things up a little as their tryout a more personal songwriting and a different melodic approach, which resulted in a highly preached album by fans and press alike.
TYR is at the moment on a North American trek supporting Children Of Bodom along with Death Angel, and last Monday that tour stopped here in Tempe, AZ. TYR was the band in charge to open the show to a half full venue (as through their set people were still people in line to get in), their show was shorter of what I expected. Nevertheless, it has really good to listen the new songs live.
They opened their set with the now classic, Hold The Heathen Hammer High out of their By The Lightning Of The Northern Star (2009) album, then a huge sample of their new album Valkyrja (2013) that included: Blood Of Heroes, Another Falling Brother, Mare Of My Night, and Lady Of The Slain. Before closing up their set with Shadow Of The Swastika out of their The Lay Of Thrym (2011) album.
I personally wish they could have more time, as not only the set was short, but it was missing more from previous works. Regardless of that their show was really good, and their crowd responded quite well to the sound of the new material live. Even the fans of COB & Death Angel enjoyed the singular style of TYR.
The Age Of Metal got the chance to speak with Terji & Gunnar of TYR before their show at Club Red In Tempe, AZ . We talked about the tour, Valkyrja, how they are perceived in the Faroe Islands, and much more.
