Sven de Caluwe and Ken Bedene of Aborted discussed touring & Necrotic Manifesto

For over ten years, Aborted have rivaled their brutal death metal piers with their mind-blowing, heavy riffs and gut churning vocals. The band has had constant lineup changes, more than 25 past members, but has consistently been lead by the sole original member, vocalist Sven de Caluwe. Aborted has members from both Belgium, and the United States, but this distance doesn’t stop them from mastering the guttural disembowelment they provide, leaving their fans yearning for more.

I had the chance to witness their gore-rific ways a few nights ago when I attended the Kill the Elite of North America tour 2014 where they supported the iconic death metal band, Kataklysm. After the last few releases, and now with a more steady line up, Aborted have proved to be returning to their undoubtedly brutal roots. They have released seven full length studio albums, not including the album The Necrotic Manifesto which is being released in the United States come April 29th.

With their heavy riffing from guitarists Danny Tunker and Mendel bij de Leij, tasteful blast beats, provided by drummer Ken Bedene, and the rhythm section held up by bassist J.B. Van Der Wal, it’s no wonder that fans eat out of their blood stained palms. They took the stage after all the local bands finished up, and immediately the energy changed. The audience lit up with wanting and anticipation. Before Aborted even started to play their first song, there was room made for a mosh pit.

For the entirety of their set, Joe’s Grotto turned into a sweaty, roaring lion’s pit complete with the unrelenting backing of the band. They played songs such as Fecal Forgery and The Origin of Disease off of their album Global Flatline, released in 2012. They did not dissatisfy when they played Necrotic Manifesto, the title track for their soon to be released album.

Before the show, we had the pleasure of speaking to Sven de Caluwe and Ken Bedene to discuss the new album, with topics such as the song writing process, guest vocalists, album art, as well as talked about the board game they’re releasing with the special edition of The Necrotic Manifesto.
