The Southwest Terror Fest is a two-day festival covering the best of Arizona’s metal scene with some of the best bands from the underground playing in an intimate setting over two days in Tucson, AZ. The Age of Metal is partnering with the folks from The Southwest Terror Fest to give you a primer of all of the bands playing. Today we look at rad post metal/sludge band North…
Band name: NORTH
Where are you from?
What do you sound like?
Sludgey Space Gloom Metal
How did you get involved with Southwest Terror Fest?
Dudes from Godhunter asked us to play.
What do you think of Arizona’s metal crowd in general?
Getting better, has a long ways to go.
What’s the most ridiculous thing that’s happened to your band?
Too many things to name, played a show in Vegas where the promoter bounced, didn’t bring a PA, had to beg the crowd for gas money and use bass amps for vocals, Got stuck in Connecticut traffic for 6 hours, missed our time slot at the show, show got moved to a tiny practice space in Boston, half the bands dropped and we still had a gnarly time, van spewing oil from Bellingham to Boise, finally get it checked in SLC, van is basically undriveable, cancel next two dates, half of us fly home, the other guys crash in SLC for 3 days and eventually drive the fixed van/trailer home. All these things were this summer alone!
How has your sound changed over time?
We started as a 4 piece instrumental, transitioned into a more metal instrumental outfit, added a vocalist, played a cross between post rock and metal, dropped some of the more post rock elements, indulged in more sludgey/gloomy tones. 4 records later here we are.
What’s the one thing you’re looking forward to the most at the fest?
Seeing all the great bands and showing the rest of the country what Arizona music is.
What band do you recommend seeing aside from yourselves?
Ladybird, Anakim, Territory, Godhunter.
