Primal Fear is one of those rare heavy metal bands that once you get to see live, their performance will get stuck in your mind forever, their show, and Ralf Scheepers‘s vocal range are things quite difficult to forget. In fact the last time I saw them was 4 years ago (which is a long time for any band wanting to expand their fan base in a different continent). But, with that being said, I was glad to see them play in AZ again.
Unfortunately for this tour Magnus Karlsson was absent as he has to take care of family business at home, fortunately original guitar player Tom Naumann is currently filling in on this tour for him. On the bright side, the possibilities of a set list with more songs from the first two albums were on the table.
Last time Primal Fear was here in AZ, it was at a smaller club, and the turnout and sound weren’t that great. So, the hopes for a better show due to be in a bigger and better venue were high. The teutonic eagles took the stage of Club Red around 10:20 pm they opened with the classic Final Embrace, out of the Jaws Of Death (1999) album, follow by Alive And On Fire, and Delivering The Black out of their new album Delivering The Black. Then Primal Fear jumped back in time to the Nuclear Fire (2001) album, and the Seven Seals (2005) album with their respective title tracks. The crowd was ecstatic, and quite interesting on the gestures of Matt, Ralf, Tom, Alex, and Randy.
The rest of the show was a mixture of old and new material including songs from the Primal Fear, Devil’s Ground, Unbreakable, Nuclear Fire, and New Religion albums. Overall, compared with 4 years ago, this time they had a better sound (as the venue was better), and the crowd turnout was bigger. We just hope that we don’t have to wait another 4 years to see a Primal Fear show again.
Before the show, we had the chance to speak with Randy Black drummer of Primal Fear about the tour, Delivering The Black, and the band’s plans for the rest of the year.
