Nothing More – Nothing More (2015)

I honestly can’t imagine any of you hardcore metal heads out there going out of your way to listen to this band. But let me tell you, this alternative metal band from San Antonio, Texas is one of the most underrated groups on the scene right now. And are quickly becoming one of my favorite bands. It took just one go around of the album to get hooked! Since 2003 the guys of Nothing More have released 6 studio albums to date. With their self titled CD, This is the Time (Ballast) going straight to number 1 on the Rock Charts.

Early last year Nothing More was signed to the Eleven Seven Music Label. The label who have signed bands such as Papa Roach & Drowning Pool, have welcomed Nothing More with open arms saying that the band has “sonically & lyrically shaken things up, from cutting through the clutter”, hence the 5 album guaranteed contract. Rarely do you see this combination of intelligent lyrical content, intricate songwriting and fantastic recording from musicians now-a-days. 11/7 – you’ve made a good choice!

With their djent rhythms, this band has a great sense of melody. Their style has a unique blend of influences, providing such variety in every track. Front man,  Johnny Hawkins, has an absolutely phenomenal  voice. His deep and meaningful lyrics deliver dynamic with Mark Vollelunga‘s powerful guitar riffs and creative style- making the album very inspiring.

Short and straight to the point, Ocean Floor controls and captivates instantly with interesting vocal effects, climaxing into the transition of the lead single, This is The Time (Ballast). Hawkins powerful vocals immediately seize your attention, while Oliver draws the listener in with his thunderous bass slides. Christ Copyright delivers a strong message through raw energy and aggression As a band, we get a sick feeling in our stomach, an ache in our head, and a pump of blood to our fists when we witness religious and political leaders telling people how to live, as if they have some kind of monopoly on the truth,” says Hawkins.

Mr.MTV also posses underlying lyrics questioning the impact corporations have on our society.Paul Obrien‘s relentless drumming carries this catchy tune, as the classic “I Want My MTV” from Dire Straits Money for Nothing cameos are scattered throughout. I’ll Be OK radiates with passion, beginning the track ever so soft and slowly, as if reflecting on the previous messages of songs prior. Gradually progressing into a heavy ballad before fading back to a melodic state. Lyrically and musically Jenny, resonates with frustration and anger, describing the downward spiral of an addict. As the song builds up to a crescendo, it instantaneously cuts out. The ominous God Went Northcloses the album with heavy emotion as the song goes into the loss of a loved one, then also seems to abruptly end mid chant. Pyre, is a nearly 10-minute long instrumental of sorts. Starting out as a sound scape, they add the voice over philosophies of Alan Watts .. ultimately ending the track in a tripp hop style.

The album is simply flawless, every one of these tracks explodes with power. . And I cant wait to see them LIVE!

January 21st, Nothing More will be at Club Red with Periphery, WolvenWar, and Thank you Scientist.
