When I got to The Whisky A Go-Go I expected it to be a smaller show, considering there were several other metal concerts nearby that night, but there was already a good-sized crowd which grew even more as the evening went on.
The first band to hit the stage was Gypsyhawk with their rock n’ roll style music reminiscent of the 1970’s. I had wanted to see them play for quite some time, but something always happened and I missed their shows. Their performance at The Whisky was amazing, surpassing all of my expectations.
The set that night consisted almost entirely of new music that will be on their next record, which sounds awesome so far. Gypsyhawk is the type of band that anybody can go see and have a great time watching them. They’re definitely a band worth checking out.
Next up was the metal band Holy Grail. I have seen them play many times before and they never disappoint. They are an extremely energetic band and always get the crowd going. Alex Lee and Eli Santana are one of the best guitar duos I’ve seen and they can do some serious shredding. Their set included many fan favorites like Ride the Void, Bleeding Stone, and Crosswinds off their record Ride The Void, and Valhalla, Immortal Man, and My Last Attack from Crisis In Utopia.
Then it was time for Monte Pittman, who is famous for playing guitar for Prong and Madonna. I had heard a lot about how good of a guitarist, he is, and he definitely lived up to his reputation. The audience was really into his music and was having a great time. The band ended up playing past midnight and Monte Pittman‘s guitar tech even came up and played a song. Finally, they ended the night with an excellent cover of Pantera‘s song Rise.
While the lineup was very diverse, they were all solid bands that know how to put on a great show. I would definitely urge everybody to catch one of their shows the next time they are playing in a city near you.
