It’s not doubt that Kreator is one of the most influential thrash metal bands that came out from the movement during the 80’s, their sound is different from the one created in the Bay area, and quite distinctive among the German thrash metal movement. As is more fresh, fast and aggressive than Sodom or Destruction.
Last week I had the chance to see them live for the first time, as for some reason every time they were in town, either I was unable to go, or their show got cancelled (like last year’s date). But this time, it seems the planets aligned and allowed me to see them at the Marquee Theater in Tempe, AZ. They toured with Overkill and Warbringer on what it was called ‘Legends Of Thrash‘ Tour 2013, and indeed it was a great show, as I mentioned on my Overkill article, the package was killer, as both bands had an extended set.
Kreator took the stage around 10 pm, and their show was a perfect dosage of new material and classic songs, they played From Flood Into Fire, United In Hate, Until Our Paths Cross Again, Civilization Collapse, and Phantom Antichrist out of their new album. But they also played songs like; Flag Of Hate, Tormentor, Warcurse, Coma Of Souls, Enemy Of God, Pleasure To Kill & Violent Revolution out of their classic repertory, and were the ones that incited the crowd, and animated the huge circle pit in the middle of the venue. It was amazing to witness how simple, but powerful their show was, as they didn’t used big lights or stage production, just blue and red light, some strobe light, and they let the music do the work.
I have seen Slayer, Testament, Overkill, Exodus, Destruction, Anthrax and Megadeth, but so far nothing comes closer to the organic effect and euphoria that a Kreator show can cause on the crowd. It was a really contagious feeling. as their music and stage presence is so powerful and just straight in your face. It was a great show indeed from one of the most important thrash metal bands out there.
Mille Petrozza of Kreator talked to us before their show here in Tempe, AZ. We talked about the impact of Phantom Antichrist in the fans and media, the experience of this North American trek with Overkill & Warbringer, his views on the new thrash metal movement, and the idea of someday have the Teutonic Four (Kreator, Sodom, Destruction & Tankard) on tour, and more.
