Metal Allegiance Fallen Heroes show (Anaheim, CA 01/20/17)

DIMMU BORGIR - Forces Of The Northern Night

When the Metal Allegiance show at the Grove of Anaheim was announced last year, we knew we should be there and be part of this historical moment, and since we were going to be in Anaheim for NAMM if felt totally right. Metal Allegiance is a congregation of different musicians from different well-known metal bands, From Megadeth to Death Angel to Machine Head to Slayer, Everyone was there.

We arrived, socialized for a while then right into the action as soon as Gus G kicked off the show. With a tailored mix of solo material and a few songs from Firewind the Greek god of the electric guitar deliver an amazing show, it was also the first time we got to see his new USA Signature Gus G. Star in action. With a fresh album on the shelves of music stores as Firewind released their new album Immortals that same day. Gus G just played his heart out that Friday night.

After that mesmerizing showcase of guitar talent, we were bound for more guitar solo goodness as Marty Friedman was the next artist to open for Metal Allegiance. Marty Friedman brought the Inferno to the stage of The Grove of Anaheim as he and his band have been on a mini tour around California playing in Oakland, and West Hollywood before landing at the Metal Allegiance show. Marty Friedman had also a new USA Signature Marty Friedman MF-1  guitar and his new ENGL Marty Friedman “INFERNO” Signature Amp both had been in the making for the past 2 years.

Marty Friedman‘s show was musically intense and energetically loaded, as I have never witnessed a more energetic bass player as Kiyoshi Manii who left a deep impression on me as one of the most entertaining bass player to watch live. Definitely, after those two opening acts, we were more than ready for some mix and match metal show.

The Metal Allegiance show was a mix and match of metal artists from different bands, celebrating the life and legacy of those artists that are not among us anymore, and whose music and talent was an influence not only to those playing their music on stage but to all of us in the crowd. It was interesting to see how all those hours of rehearsing paid off as each song played on stage was played by a different line-up.

One of the most interesting and touching moments of the night was when they brought up on stage Mr. Ray Burton (Cliff Burton‘s Father) to not only celebrate, the life and legacy of Cliff but also to celebrate Mr. Ray Burton‘s 92nd birthday. Let’s say that they played and an awesome cover of Metallica‘s Disposable Heroes and there was cake.

The Metal Allegiance was a fun show that displayed a lot of musical talent and at the same time brought all us together to celebrate the life and legacy of some of the most influential musicians in rock history.
