Last week we were surprised with the album trailer from a new death metal band called Gruesome, what breaks apart this new union of death metal fanatics and enthusiasts from the conglomerated of bands out there, is the fact that their music is a clear reflection & a tribute to the legacy of Death, We know that if it wasn’t for Death, we won’t know death metal as it is nowadays. Now, Gruesome is not a cover/tribute band, they are an original band that plays death metal following the patters left by Chuck Schuldiner & company.
Gruesome is conformed by Matt Harvey (Exhumed) guitars and vocals, drummer Gus Rios (Malevolent Creation), guitarist Daniel Gonzalez (Possessed) and bassist Robin Mazen (Derketa). The idea of this band came together during the time that Matt Harvey & Gus Rios were involved with Death To All Tour back in 2012, after half-jokingly suggesting to write their own material based on the music from the first two albums of Death, they started to put together pieces and it wasn’t long till they had a handful of songs, a line up to go with it, and were heading to Riversound Studios in Fort Lauderdale, FL where Rios & Gonzales recorded the music, while Mazen recorded in Miami, FL and Harvey did his parts in the West Coast. The album was mixed by Jarrett Pritchard at Mana Studios in St. Petersburg, FL.
The result is, Savage Land, an eight song album that captures the musical spirit of Death and pays tribute to the memory of Chuck Schuldiner and the legacy of Death‘s music. The album is expected to be released on North America via Relapse Records on April 21st, 2015, April 17th in Germany, Benelux and Finland and April 20th in the UK and the rest of the world on CD and digitally.
The Age Of Metal caught up with guitar player and vocalist of Gruesome Matt Harvey last Monday as he is on tour with his band Exhumed. We talked about the ideas behind Gruesome, Savage Land, and the live plans for the band.
