Markus Vanhala of Omnium Gatherum talks about their busiest year ever

Finnish sextet Omnium Gatherum have been slowly but steadily becoming a regular band to tour the US as they are just completing their third visit as part of the Sonata Arctica tour along with Leaves Eyes. Omnium Gatherum gained the love and respect from the American crowds after completing two almost consecutive tours with Dark Tranquillity and later with Insomnium a few years ago which exposed their popularity among melo-death fans.

Finland is well-known for their quality export bands as it seems they get around the world pretty quick, The times of having only one Finnish band touring the US once in a blue moon are way behind, today we have the pleasure of seeing two or more at any given tour, and Omnium Gatherum is not the exception as they returned to North America after a busy year that saw them releasing their new album Grey Heavens back in February before embarking on an extensive European tour with Amorphis, a busy summer filled with European festival dates, then they did quick visits to Japan, Korea and their first time in Hong Kong then closing with a short tour in Russia before announcing a new drummer (Tuomo Latvala) and then inking a deal with Century Media records.

Forwarding to their current tour they stopped by Club Red in Mesa, AZ last week making this their third official visit to the state which I must say it was a great turn out for a Monday night show, even though their show was early they had a good crowd that has waited to check out some of the new material live. Even though their set was short we had the chance to experienced live songs like The Pit, Skyline, Frontiers, Ophidian Sunrise out of Gray Heavens along with hits like New Dynamic, Ego, and New World Shadows. It was a great seeing new faces head banging along those songs as the popularity of Omnium Gatherum grows as their visits become more frequent. We hope to see the band on a headlining spot soon as these 35-minute set aren’t cutting it anymore.

Before the show in Mesa, AZ we had the chance to chat with Markus Valhala guitar player of Omnium Gatherum about the tour, their new album, the new drummer and their busiest year yet.
