Markus Valhala of Omnium Gatherum talked to us about Beyond North America 2014

After 20 years of existence, the Gothenburg sound still influences young bands out there. Some ended up copying their riffs and rip off their sounds, others just take the movement as a reference point to develop their own sound. That is the case of Finnish melodic death metal act, Omnium Gatherum, who after six albums they have projected themselves as a new breed of melodic death metal.

I became aware of Omnium Gatherum until last year when I received the promo for their latest album, Beyond, which I thought it was a good record, and at that time I thought; ‘it is a shame that we in America could never have the chance to see a band like that, unless they break out big or a more established act decides to bring them along with them on tour’.
Well, my surprise was big when it was announced they were coming with Dark Tranquillity for a North American tour, I was speechless.

Last Sunday I got the chance to see them live at Club Red here in Tempe, AZ. Their show was really good, and their sound was flawless. They played a set focused on their two latest records, so we had the pleasure to hear songs like LuotoNew Dynamic, The Unknowing and Living In Me, from the Beyond (2013) album, Along with New World Shadows, Ego & Deep Cold from the New World Shadows (2011). Their live show was quite emotional and full of textures which supported really well the melancholy within their lyrics.

Overall their show was great, and it seems the crowd received their music quite well, regardless if they knew them or not. I am happy to say that this won’t be the only time we will be able to see Omnium Gatherum around here as their fan base keeps growing with every city they visit.

Before the show, we had the pleasure to speak with guitar player Markus Valhala of Omnium Gatherum. We talked about their experiences on this first North American tour, the reception of the people, Beyond, and he also gave us an inside on what’s going on with the new Insomnium album, as he plays guitar with them too.
