Mark Vollelunga of Nothing More discussed the state of music, and the band’s new self-title album

Nothing More consists of vocalist Johnny Hawkins, bassist Daniel Oliver, Mark Vollelunga on guitar, and “main” drummer Paul Obrien (as all members contribute to an epic drum line of sorts during shows) After 12 years, this band is finally getting the recognition they deserve. Currently the guys of Nothing More along with Wovenwar, have opened up for Periphery on their CD release promo tour, ending mid February. But it doesn’t stop there for Nothing More, oh no – they’re continuing their tour over seas! They’ll be performing at the Soundwave Festival in Australia, then off to the UK, several other parts of Europe and even Japan!! After their show last week, I’m half tempted to get some more stamps in my passport just to see them sooner than later.

Believe me when I say how hard it is to put into words, or at least in the vaguest description of Nothing More‘s phenomenal stage performance last Wednesday, Jan 21st. They did not disappoint all the hype and I would say, for many, definitely stole the show! Their high energy was second to none all throughout their set. Hawkins took the stage, cut and shirtless, making every girl swoon (and probably some guys too) as he unleashed his influential lyrics onto the crowd. Mark Vollelunga, several times, went on soloing with his teeth! And as a special treat, the guys had rigged a mechanism to the steam punk like drum set center stage, to hold Oliver‘s bass in place at chest level. Oliver proceeded to tap out an epic melody as Vollelunga set aside his guitar to join in, mimicking the tapping method on the very same instrument. At this point, the entire audience has blown and lost their minds. But not before Hawkins contributes his mallet skills creating a simultaneous 3 man solo! After a few minutes of this unique display of talent, they end the song by swinging the locked-in bass around and out, orbiting the drum set. The bass slowed to a pendulum state as the lights dimmed out and the crowd screamed for more!

We had met up with Mark Vollelunga, shortly after the doors of Club Red opened. During the interview, we discussed the writing process and what the success of their latest self-titled album means to them as a band. I asked for Vollelunga‘s take on “sheeple”, to which he describes the message behind the music video of Mr.MTV. We also fell into a conversation of how failure and accomplishments balance out in a way compared to The Matrix, and even skimmed the surface of an ideal society. It truly was a pleasure to sit down and talk with a person so genuine, being it so rare to find someone else that shares the same thought process. There’s no denying that Nothing More is incredibly talented, I can’t wait to see what they’ll do next!
