The last time I saw Kobra Paige with Kobra And The Lotus was when they played a full house at Martini Ranch opening for Amaranthe a couple of years back, their show and energy were so good live that night, that they really lighted up the place and keep the crowd warm. After that show I found out that this handful of Canadian heavy metal warriors were actually helped by KISS‘ s Gene Simmons to get signed with Universal.
Despising the push that Simmons gave to the band at that time, they independently had become a reckoning force in the heavy metal scene, with their sharp riffs and the powerful voice of front-woman Kobra Paige. Last year the band had the opportunity/responsibility to open for KISS & Def Leppard during their North American summer tour, and part of their support for their third album High Priestess.
Most recently Kobra And The Lotus will be releasing a cover EP on August 28th titled, Words Of The Prophets. On anticipation to that EP, the band did a small tour that covered the West Coast and some dates in Colorado, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona. They played at Club Red in Mesa, AZ this past Tuesday night, on a show that unfortunately wasn’t even the shadow of the crowd they got a couple of years ago at Martini Ranch. It might be because it was a weekday night, or because of the rain and dust storm alerts that we got here that day, but unfortunately there was not even more than 50 people at their show that night
Regardless of the crowd size the band delivered a great show to the lucky ones that braved the weekday, the rain and the dust storm. They played a mixed set from their last two album; High Priestess, Battle of Wrath, Warhorse, I Am, I Am, Heartbeat, and Hold On out of the High Priestess (2014) album. Welcome to My Funeral, Forever One, and 50 Shades of Evil from their self-titled Kobra And The Lotus (2012) album, and only a single song; Sign of the Gypsy Queen (Lorence Hud cover) out of their upcoming EP Words Of The Prophets (2015).
Their show was intimate, and it was a reinsurance of the driving force that Kobra And the Lotus possesses when they are up on the stage, hopefully they comeback soon on a different day or a different time of the year, so we will able to see a full house for one of the most impressive and energetic Canadian heavy metal bands out there.
Before the show, we catch up with Kobra Paige to talk about the tour, the new EP, their upcoming European tour with Kamelot and Gus G and their preparations to going into the studio for their fourth album.
