Kobra And The Lotus – Kobra And The Lotus (2013)

Roaring out of the Great White North. Specifically Alberta, Calgary, Canada. Comes, Kobra And The Lotus with their sophomore release, the self titled “Kobra And The Lotus”. This release, is a huge step up from their first release, “Into The Pit”.  From the songwriting, to the massive production shine. This probably has a lot to do with the fact that the band has matured over time due to heavy touring, and more than likely the mere fact of the involvement of one Gene Simmons of Kiss fame discovering them and signing them to his label imprint under the Universal Music Group label.

This new release was actually recorded in 2011. But after shopping it around and being signed by Simmons and UMG, the band went back into the studio to record 4 new songs under the guidance of Producer/Engineer Kevin Churko. Kevin took the songs that had already been recorded and worked his magic remixing them. Then he remastered the whole album for release.

Fronted by Kobra Paige, who has a nice powerful throaty voice, this slab of what could be classified NWOBHM, rips out of the speakers with the first song 50 Shades Of Evil, and rolls on from there with massive riffs, led by the twin guitar attack of Jasio Kulakowski (Replacing original guitarist Chris Swenson), and Charlie Parra Del Riego (Replacing original guitarist ). The twin guitar assault reminds me of the Judas Priest guitars of Tipton/Downing, or the guitars of Gorham/Robertson era Thin Lizzy. Providing a solid foundation to all of this, is the masterful drumming of Griffin Kissack, and the big bottom end of Pete Dimov. All 10 songs on the CD are well written and definitely show a maturity that was lacking on their first release.

Highlights for me are the anthemic song Forever One, eastern inflected Welcome To My Funeral, and No Rest For The Wicked. In your face guitars, Big drums, group choruses, pounding rhythms, and  vocals that run the gamut from low notes to Halford highs!

This is a CD worthy of any Metal lovers collection.
