Job for a Cowboy – Demonocracy (2012)

Back in high-school I remember being introduced to a little known local act by the name of Job for a Cowboy. I was introduced to them via their first EP by the name of Doom. Their Doom EP was the first time I was ever introduced this thing called “Deathcore”. Once their first full length Genesis was released I noticed a slight change to a more Death metal sound. As Job for a Cowboy progressed they have slowly but surely rid themselves of their “core” elements opting for a more traditional sound. Now in 2012 they have released their newest album called Demonocracy and have continued to evolve their Death metal sound with a nice dose of technically.

Demonocracy starts off with Children of Deceit and hits you face first with an intense riff that will instantly makes you want you want headbang. One thing that is noticeable is the improvement of instrumentality. The guitar riffs are very tight and are much more technical. Guitarists Al Glassman and Tony Sannicandro have created interesting riffs coupled with dark leads. Songs like Imperium Wolves and The Manipulation Stream shows off the technically with riffs that would not be out of place in bands of the Technically Death Metal sub-genre. Now Job for a Cowboy are not as near as technical as bands like Obscura or Atheist but they do get the job done and a majority of the songs on the album do in fact sound different from one another. Vocalist Jonny Davy is good at keeping the band heavy with a mix of low monstrous growls with high screech-like vocals. Drummer Jon “The Charn” Rice is extremely proficient at his drumming as he played live with such acts as 1349 or Austrian Death Machine and definitely is able to carry the song to it’s fullest. Bassist Nick Schendzielos keeps the rhythmic section from going too crazy (he is also a member of Cephalic Carnage).

With Demonocracy Job for a Cowboy has created a solid album and shows off their technical prowess. With this album Job for a Cowboy has definitely forgone their Deathcore roots and progressed themselves as musicians.
