I grew up with the VHS version of Maiden England ’88, and seeing it released on DVD this March 25th causes a huge mixed of emotions. Not only because Iron Maiden was the first band that got me into metal, and my favorite band in the world, but because watching this DVD brought me memories of the first time I watched it in a busted VHS player connected to a tube TV when I was ten years old.

The double-disc DVD version of the Maiden England ’88 is one of the most anticipated DVD releases that fans of Iron Maiden have been waiting for as the only version was the VHS tape released in 1989. The live show was recorded during the two sold out nights at the Birmingham N.E.C Arena, UK on 27th & 28 of November 1988 during the Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son world tour.

My first impression was how clear and crisp the image and sound compare with the VHS version, it makes me feel like the first time I watched the VHS I had the wrong eyeglass prescription as the images were blurred, and the color was very intense that you can barely could see the band. Also this DVD version is longer, as it contained three unreleased encores that are not in the VHS version (Running Free, Run To The Hills & Sanctuary). My second impression was the timeless ability that Iron Maiden has to make their fans go nuts at their shows whether it is 1988 or 2012, I say this because while I was seated on my couch watching this DVD I felt almost the same as I did when I saw the band last year during the Maiden England North American Tour. I was excited for the next song, about to burst into tears of emotion, and the happiness that I feel every time I see Maiden live is beyond words.

A couple of things that I like about this DVD besides the three new encores are; watching Iron Maiden play Still Life, Killers and Infinite Dreams as so far I have never seen them live, the second thing is how crazy people go when they play Die With The Boots On (which is pretty much one of the greatest metal hymns ever written).

The sound on this DVD is also upgraded from the original VHS done by Martin Birch, and includes a special 5.1 audio surround mix done by Iron Maiden‘s producer Kevin Shirley. So pumped up that sound system, take it to 11 and enjoy it. The direction and edition of the DVD were done by Steve Harris himself delivering a clear and astonishing show from the “fan’s perspective”, well except the parts of Nicko McBrain, as no matter where you are in the arena you will never get a glimpse of him unless he gets up from his chair.

The second DVD disc has the part 3 of The History Of Iron Maiden, and the documentary 12 Wasted Years including interviews, live footage of the band beginnings at the legendary and now closed Rusky Arms in London. Closing this DVD disc are the promo videos for: Wasted Years, Stranger In A Stanger Land, Can I Play With Madness, The Clayvoyant, and The Evil That Men Do. So is a real treat and a trip down to memory lane into the history of the band.

This DVD not only reflects a different era that many of us didn’t have the chance to experience, but with the help of technology we can do that now. Also explains why Iron Maiden is bringing back these tours as our new generations can live those moments that their  parents, friends, and relatives lived once. So do not miss watching the band on tour in Europe this summer, as you guys are up for a treat with this show. Overall the release of this DVD is a new part of the already great and extensive history of one of the most important heavy metal bands of all time, Iron Maiden. UP THE BLOODY IRONS!!!!
