After the 2013 Maximum Cavalera Tour, Incite was gearing up to write the follow-up to All Out War. Problem was, our current guitar player decided that he no longer wanted to be in the band. This left us in kind of lurch. Fortunately, former guitar player Kevin “Dis” McCallister was available, & agreed to help us write the record.
This came out in November (2013) did one show with us, & then we jammed in Richie‘s garage for a week & came up with the skeletons for 6 songs. Then back to New Jersey he went.
Fast forward six months & tons of demos later (thank you Dropbox!) we finally got back together for a week of preproduction & rehearsals.
Now, here we are in North Hollywood, in a hella sketchy hotel, ready to record. We’re fortunate to have wrangled the cerebral Matt Hyde (Deftones, Hatebreed, Slayer) to produce. He has great taste in breakfast joints.
Unless you are a drummer, the first couple of days in the studio is Snoozeville! Picking cymbals, snares, heads, ect. Getting tones & such. Boooooooring!!
In contrast Lennon Lopez was in hog heaven, a kid in a candy store. Big kit, big drum room, big boom!
Three, twelve hour days (& a few studio gremlins) later, Lennon blasted through the drums. They sound HUGE! The kid is a machine.
A huge thank you has to go out to uber producer Ryan Greene for the use of his Validus Studios to do the drums in. Great studio, great hospitality.
In between drum takes & burn downs, we had the honor of getting a photo shoot with the legendary Glen La Ferman. He’s shot everyone from Bob Marley to Mötley Crüe. It was a friggin‘ blast. Not only are his pictures top-notch, but Glen is a riot. Surly, sarcastic, & stories for days. We may do another shoot with him at his house. I can’t wait!
Of course, no Incite trip would be complete without van trouble. The “Champ Wagon” is definitely on her last leg. Her radiator is starting to give. Richie used his junior NASCAR pit crew skills to patch her up & keep her on the road.
The highlight of the trip so far, other than my obligatory stop at Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles, it’s the sounds of crackheads & hookers bumbling around at all hours at the hotel where we’re staying… Rock n’ Roll!
Until next time….
