Heljarmadr of Dark Funeral discussed Hellfest & Where Shadows Forever Reign

With over 20 years in the business, Dark Funeral is considered one of the few remaining institutions of the original Scandinavian black metal movement. After going through a recent lineup change Dark Funeral released last month their six studio album Where Shadows Forever Reign featuring new vocalist Heljarmadr

Where Shadows Forever Reign carries the traditional Dark Funeral music style and lyrical signature that the band has been known for the last 23 years. This album is fast, dark and in a sense has a more crisp sound from what they did on their 2009 album Angelus Exuro pro Eternus. The addition of Heljarmadr on vocals certainly gives the album a different approach and a different character in the vocal work of the album. So that is something that stands up as a new feature on the band’s new material.

Now, in the live-show aspect of the band, It been a few years since the last time I saw Dark Funeral, which was during the US tour they did with Grave in 2012. At the time their show was good, but I guess you don’t get to see the best part of the band’s show until you see them play at a summer European festival.

Their show at Hellfest during the second day of the festival and the Temple stage turn out to be a special kind of ritual. It felt special as it was one of the last performance of the day and they squeezed the last straw of energy that the crowd before them had left after a full day of metal shows.

Dark Funeral‘s set at Hellfest was a mix of classic and new songs including Unchain My Soul, Where Shadows Forever Reign, As I Ascend and Nail Them To The Cross from their new album, and of course classic fan-favorite pieces like The Arrival of Satan’s Empire, Hail Murder, Vobiscum Satanas, Atrum Regina and My Funeral. It was an amazing and unique show, a way different experience from the regular on-tour show.

The day before their show we had the chance to chat with Heljarmadr new vocalist of Dark Funeral about the band’s new album, his experience with the band so far, the expectation to playing Hellfest, the idea of a USA tour and what is next for Dark Funeral for the rest of the year.
