Flotsam and Jetsam – Ugly Noise (2013)

From the desert wasteland of Arizona Flotsam and Jetsam are releasing their new album called Ugly Noise.  Sincere their career in the early 80’s Flotsam and Jetsam have been pumping out the records over the years.  Ugly Noise is an album that stands out for sure.

Flotsam and Jetsam have changed things up a bit to create the sound for the record,  its different but still very good.  Over the years bands progress and their sound and style tends to change.  Listening to their album in the beginning of their career they were more thrash driven.  Today when you hear the new album Ugly Noise you can hear a big difference.  The guys have crossed their sound into more of a hard rock style but of course they have kept their metal roots.  Portraying different sides and different skills show casing their talents as versatile composers Ugly Noise is a great album from a writing stand point as well as a listener.

The album kicks off with the titled track Ugly Noise.  A dreary piano intro followed by Eric ‘AK’ Knutson vocals fit nicely and tie in together with the album cover of a dingy old, broken up piano.  The song has a couple of heavy rifts and great hard rock vocals that makes the song very catchy.  Personally loved the piano because it really is what makes the song and shows a different sophisticated side of Flotsam and Jetsam.  Carry On is a very cool song off the album because its different from the previous ones, it’s a track that tapped into its thrash elements but incorporated other influences on it.  The mixture made this song a great one.

Rabbit’s Foot is an amazing song, it’s a slow track on the album but shows the strength of Eric ‘AK’ Knutson of voice.  The song is dominated by his incredible vocals it’s a simple emotional raw track.  The most classy name for a song has to be Motherfuckery.  This track is definitely a more metal inspired.  listening closely to the lyrics you’ll understand why it’s titled MotherfuckeryTo Be Free has to be the best song on the album, it’s filled with raw intense energy and is in your face.  From vocals, to guitars everything is brutal.  A taste of angst and aggression just the way you like it.  Finally the last track off the album Machine Gun closes things off .  There is a great guitar solo at 1:21 & the lyrics “past the point of no return,” will definitely get stuck in your head.

Ugly Noise the 11th album of Flotsam and Jetsam’s career and its great.  Different for sure, but over all its a great album.  It’s great to see such a historic band keep making music and be so innovative so many years later.
