Fleshgod Apocalypse – Labyrinth (2013)

Fleshgod Apocalypse - Labyrinth - smaller

Labyrinth from Fleshgod Apocalypse is probably one of the most anticipated albums released this year. I’m happy to inform you all that it is definitely worth the hype. How can a band progress so much yet remain the same? Only Fleshgod Apocalypse knows that answer. That’s the best way to describe what this new release is like. There are more theatrics being incorporated in that indomitable musicianship. And that’s what makes this album so flawless.

This album starts off powerful with the track Kingborn. Fleshgod’s classic sound of technical musicianship intertwined with orchestral and operatic elements quickly comes into play. The next track Minotaur (The Wrath of Poseidon) continues this trend; it opens with a piano melody, and eventually transcends to an epic metal orchestra. You hear the octopus-style drumming best in the track The Fall of Asterion. Especially in the beginning of the song, the drumming is so complicated it’s hard to think what he’s actually doing. Overall, every song on this album contains an indescribable amount of energy and vigor that you won’t find anywhere else.

I feel Fleshgod Apocalypse goes in the more symphonic direction with each album. Comparing this release to their Mafia EP released in 2010, Labyrinth is much more melodic whereas Mafia was technical and brutal. The more orchestral elements were incorporated in this release, as well as more involvement from the opera singer Veronica “ValchiRea” Bordacchini who was featured in the tracks Temptation and The Egoism from the album Agony. I find it interesting that the lyrical theme of this album is the Greek legend of the Minotaur. Some of the tracks are named after famous scenes of the myth, such as Minotaur (The Wrath of Poseidon) and The Fall of Asterion. Also, the title of the album is Labyrinth. Colin Marks, who designed album covers for infamous death metal bands Aborted and Kataklysm, designed this detailed and incomparable cover. The exceptional mixing and mastering was done by Stefano “Saul” Morabito. Overall, this mammoth of an album is sure to thrive.

This album truly is a masterpiece. Fleshgod Apocalypse has several features that can take to one’s liking: kinetic death metal, symphonic melodies, epic atmosphere, and stunning opera singing. This album is certainly striking compared to their previous releases. Fleshgod Apocalypse ascended to one of the most influential and embossing bands in death metal. This momentum is sure to be infinite.  Fleshgod Apocalypse will be supporting Wintersun on their headlining North America tour this fall. If you haven’t seen Fleshgod Apocalypse live yet, you’re definitely in for a treat.
