Devin Townsend Project – Z2: Dark Matters/Sky Blue (2014)

Canadian musician, Devin Townsend, former vocalist/guitarist for the band Strapping Young Lad (1997-2007), recently released the sequel to his 2007 rock opera – Ziltoid the Omniscient, Z2: Dark Matters/Sky Blue. Z2, short for Ziltoid 2, is a double concept album that has been a-long-time-a-coming. The very talented Devin Townsend wrote, produced, and released the album himself, but the project is made up of guitar/keyboard Dave Young (SYL), bassist Brian Waddell, and drummer Ryan Van Poederooyen, of whom he couldn’t have done without.

With a wide range of incredible musical style, Townsend is someone who truly understands the aspect of composition. Honestly, it is quite a lot to take in, being nearly 2 hours’ worth of material. It’s different, fun, and a very new style of industrial. Just prepare yourselves for a theatrical, full on musical. Townsend, in my opinion, has one of the most unique voices and style out there. On top of his crushing guitar riffs, precise layering of tracks, and not to mention a universal choir & orchestra – Z2: Dark Matters/Sky Blue is worth every minute.

In the style of a 50’s radio broadcast, the story line consists of The Devin Townsend Project as a band VS. Ziltoid (the extra-terrestrial being). Ziltoid’s sole purpose is to travel the galaxy in search of our universes “ultimate cup of coffee” – and if not pleased, threatens to blow up the entire planet in disapproval.  There are quite a few guest spots in this album/storyline – not only narrating but contributing musically as well, such as Dominque Lenore Persi (front woman/ accordionist of Stolen Babies) who portrays the newest villain “The Evil War Princess”.  Another character you may recognize is Chris Jericho (front man of Fozzy and also professional wrestler) who plays the part of Captain Spectacular, DPT’s aid in the attempt to save the world!  Anneke Van Giersbergen (Dutch ex-vocalist of The Gathering) and Che Aimee Dorval, whom have both worked on previous DTP albums in the past, are also back to lend their angelic voices to a few tracks.

Now for Sky Blue, a lot of hardcore Townsend fans feel that this album is boring, too slow, and a bit pop. The album is said to be created from the humans stand point in addition to the Rock Opera- However, I personally favor this album more, not only for the instrument aspect, which is very original with a melodic style. But also for the brilliant lyrics that are screaming the message towards the sanctity of the human race, of all that’s wrong with the world, how it’s time to WAKE UP & take action! Everyone is so close minded when it comes to what’s really important in life. I firmly believe that music is a weapon, and Townsend knows exactly how to wield it. Music has the power to reach out, shape minds, and help us grow as people. I believe this should be the future of music. Out of his 22 + albums, this is probably one of Townsend’s best albums to date, as he has gone above and beyond.
