Dark Tranquillity/Swallow The Sun/Enforcer/Starkill at Club Red Mesa, AZ (12/03/16)

After two years of absence, Dark Tranquillity found its way back to the Arizona desert as part of one largest tour they have done in North America. This time around they came with a diverse package that saw Club Red get a good size audience for a Saturday night show. Swallow The Sun, Enforcer and Starkill brought the house down for a diverse crowd that appreciated each band’s style.

Starkill opened the night with a set list that featured several songs from their new album Shadow Sleep, a bit different from what fans saw last August when they came with Ne Obliviscaris and Black Crown Initiated. We got to discovered more of what the new album has to offer as it is a more melodic sound, that shows how Starkill can diversify their sound and tap into other styles to create a non-conventional live experience.

Regardless of the band’s style shown since their début album Fires of Life (2013) the band has shaped their own sound and leaving behind the overly influenced melodic death metal style that she show on that first record and that bleed over a bit on The Virus of the Mind (2014)

Starkill keeps delivering a vibrant live show that is both heavy, melodic and entertaining. Their live show reflects the band’s journey and how all these years of touring North America and Europe had shaped their music and their stage presence.

Next up was Swedish speed metal band Enforcer, who brought a different vibe and tempo to a show that had Melodic Death metal written all over, Enforcer delivered a set that was raw, eclectic and a real heavy metal treat for the crowd who seem joyful from what was going on stage. Enforcer played songs like; From Beyond, Destroyer, Undying Evil out of their latest album From Beyond, they also played some older material like Live for the Night, Take Me Out of This Nightmare and Midnight Vice.

It was fun and interesting seeing a Swedish band delivering an 80’s heavy metal set with enough energy to transport the room back to the 80’s

It was time to dive into the meat of the show as Swallow The Sun took the stage with the intention to lay waste on the feeling of everyone in the room, and ‘Oh My Fucking God’ if they did it, every song seemed timeless and emotionally charge, they definitely know how to musically fuck with everyone’s feelings. The Club Red got a bit more Swedish cold as they played 10 Silver Bullets, Rooms and Shadows,Silhouettes from their latest album Songs From The North I, II & III (2015)

Not content with that they decided to take the crown deep down into their discography and bringing to the stage songs like; Silence of the Womb, Cathedral Walls, New Moon, Descending Winters. The number of songs seems short, but believe me, they were so intense and powerful that their whole set seems timeless, It’s been a while since the last time Swallow The Sun visited us, but definitely their music left a huge emotional print, and we can’t wait to see them return next year with Amorphis.

Finally, it was time to catch up with a dose of Dark Tranquillity‘s new music as only a month ago they released their new album Atoma. From that album, they played five songs (Atoma, Force Hand, Neutrality, Forward Momentum and The Pitiless), those songs were not only sounded great live, but they also fitted flawlessly with the rest of the set, especially among the material they played from their previous album Construct (2014).

The rest of the set was more of less a trip throughout DT’s discography that included songs from Construct (2014), Friction (2007), Character (2005), Damage Done (2002) and Haven (2000), Surprisingly enough there were not songs from The Gallery or Skydancer, but I guess it gets quite difficult to pick songs when you have so many albums under your belt and you are touring on a new record.

It was a great show with a variety of genres and styles in one single package, regardless of being labeled a melo-death tour because of the top bands in the bill, but there was enough for everyone and it seems the crowd left the venue quite content after the show, From Starkill to Enforcer to Swallow The Sun to Dark Tranquillity they all delivered great sets and the crowd certainly acknowledged that.
