I remember coming across Anathema‘s Eternity album during my teenage days, and listening to it back to back for days. At that time it was the most dark and relaxing music I ever heard, even though the band had move on from that period they still remain as an important musical influence for me today.
So after I heard they were touring North America this year, I was totally excited to see them for the first time. So finally, last Saturday October 5th, I got to cross that off of my bucket list. I got to the venue right before one of the supporting bands started, Mamiffer, didn’t impress me as I found their set was full of feedbacks, and almost white noise that I couldn’t even stand for more than two songs. After them Alcest took the stage, the notorious french band that caused a great impression on me when I saw them in a rat ass bar in Scottsdale last year. This time their sound was better, which allowed me to enjoy more their music. Their set was praised by the enthusiastic crowd that seems pleased by their music.
Anathema took the stage around 10 pm and from the beginning you could feel the tranquility and relaxation that their music can produce, it was a total trip of harmonies and beautiful melodies that warmed the heart, and lift the spirit. Indeed the band has changed with the years to a more peaceful and relaxing state, and their lyrics are more about feelings, the human element, the heart and the spirit. Experiencing Anathema live is an experience of beautiful music that will touch your heart, and will uplift your spirit. Overall it was a great show, full of feelings and beautiful music, something different within the regular metal spectrum. I hope these guys can make their way back to North America soon.
We had the pleasure to talk with Danny Cavanagh guitar player and founding member of Anathema about this North American tour, their new live album Universe, their latest studio album Weather Systems, the past, and what is next for Anathema in 2014.
