Arjen Anthony Lucassen, well-known multi instrumentalist, composer & songwriter always knows how to surprise us with each one of his musical projects (Ayreon, Star One, Guilt Machine just to name a few) This time around he had team up with the amazing vocalist Anneke van Giersbergen (ex- The Gathering) to create The Gentle Storm, an amazing soft and at the same time heavy band that delivers the musical genius of Arjen Lucassen combined with the beautiful voice of Anneke Van Giersbergen all in a single musical masterpiece.
The musical fruits of this heavenly union are reflected on the début double album of The Gentle Storm titled The Diary. The idea behind The Diary is a conceptual album that describes the story of love, loss, and separation of two fictional seventeenth-century lovers. A Dutch sailor who embarks on a two-year voyage, leaving his wife at home in Holland. The only way for the couple to communicate and keep their love alive during the long separation is through letters. These letters form the basis for the songs on the album.
The story is so rich and different as it describes not only the stories of the two main characters, but it also gives a glimpse of the splendor of the era (the Dutch golden age). The album is divided of two parts one called ‘The Gentle’ and the other called ‘The Storm’. each part is conformed by 10 songs that are lyrically identical, but musically different. On ‘The Gentle’ part you will find folky and acoustic versions of the songs, and in ‘The Storm’ are the heavy riff loaded versions of the songs.
The Gentle Storm will be released on March 24th via Inside Out Music, and currently can be pre-order HERE
To get a better understanding of the story behind The Gentle Storm, The Age Of Metal had the chance to speak with Arjen Lucassen about how The Gentle Storm came to existence, the members and guest musicians on it, The Diary, and how this band inspired him to go out and play a handful of acoustic shows with Anneke van Giersbergen.
