Jeff Loomis & Keith Merrow of Conquering Dystopia talked with The Age Of Metal

OVERKILL - White Devil Armory

cd1

I have seen Jeff Loomis shred on his own a couple times, and I could describe that as a hypnotic experience, but seen Jeff Loomis, Keith Merrow, Alex Webster, and Alex Rüdinger performing live as Conquering Dystopia that was just pure witchery.

Last Saturday, I had the chance to see this project take off as the band played for the first time at the Schecter NAMM Party at The Grove in Anaheim, CA. I have been really excited about this project since it was announced back in July 2013, and they launched a successful Indiegogo campaign that raised the funds to record their upcoming debut album.

Conquering Dystopia is an impressive project, musically speaking. Jeff Loomis‘s solo album, Plains Of Oblivion, was impressive when it came out a couple of years back, and seeing him play that stuff live was beyond amazing. But with Conquering Dystopia, and the caliber in the musicians on it, you have a different ballgame. Alex Webster brings that brutal tone from Cannibal Corpse on bass guitar, the speed and skill of The Faceless‘s drummer Alex Rüdinger, and of course the versatility of solo guitar player Keith Merrow combined with the unique guitar playing of Jeff Lommis, that certainly gives a new name to the sound of destruction and annihilation. If the end of the world could have a soundtrack that would be Conquering Dystopia‘s music.

Now, from the first riff, and without having any album or song out yet, this band destroyed The Grove of Anaheim. Their music is beyond words that could be categorized in a single genre, its heavy, its melodic, there is insane guitar & bass playing, and all it works without a single lyric.
Many bands in the past have failed to create pure music that would stand on its own without lyrics, Conquering Dystopia succeeds in not having a vocalist, as their show presents itself as all about the music, and their skills with the musical instruments.

Conquering Dystopia, surprises with their very own sound. Even though it’s quite early to know how the band will sound on their upcoming album. Which is expected to be release by the end of February, but one thing is sure, if they sound they way their material sounded live last Saturday, We assure you their album will rip apart every other record to be release this year.

A couple of days before their début show at The Grove, The Age Of Metal had the chance to talk with Jeff Loomis & Keith Merrow at the Schecter booth during NAMM 2014. We talked about the project, their sound, their upcoming album and their new Schecter signature model guitars.
