Devin Townsend is a legend whose legacy cannot be escaped. As an incredibly influential musician with 20, almost 22, albums in his discography, it’s hard to live on without having encountered his work from Strapping Young Lad, The Devin Townsend Project, The Devin Townsend Band or any of his solo work. With a long list of incredibly impressive albums behind him, Devin Townsend continues to amaze audiences worldwide and is currently touring the States with Gojira.
At their stop here in Tempe, AZ I had the pleasure of not only talking with Devin Townsend himself, but seeing his incredible (as always) live performance for the second time! One of the best things about him is that he is not afraid to show who he is; he actually came on stage in a plaid shirt and Grover (from Sesame Street) shorts. One would think this would distract people from his performance, but nope. Devin cannot disappoint. His facial expressions, witty comments and all-around outgoing personality make his show BETTER! As a matter of fact, it wouldn’t be the complete Devin experience without it.
Devin Townsend was definitely the perfect fit with this tour (as was The Atlas Moth) and the show was just fantastic (did I mention that Gojira was amazing, as well?). From the montage of clips played while Devin was setting up, to the music and even to the fans, I could not have asked for a better show. I ended up leaving one of the best concerts I’ve seen in a while. Even at the end, both Devin and the guys from Gojira came to the barrier and greeted all the fans they could, which makes their music all the better. All of their personalities shined through and it makes you like a band even more when you know they care so much about the fans.
We had the opportunity to talk to Devin Townsend about Ziltoid, NAMM, touring and upcoming albums.
