Ex Deo is one of those bands that their concept goes beyond their music, and in this case Maurizio Lacono had developed the way to tell the story of ancient Rome through the music of the band. With their first album Ex Deo told the story of Romulus, and the birth of the empire. On their next chapter they selected emperor Caligula as the backbone story for their new album. Caligvla not only tells the story of one of the most ruthless emperors of ancient Rome, but also other aspects of the Roman life especially those about military service and Roman culture in general.
During their show here in Tempe, AZ last Monday, we got a pretty good idea of the concept that Ex Deo had developed. The band presents themselves as Roman legionaries, wearing Roman armors, and using war banners on stage. All those elements mixed up with their music made the set of Ex Deo a different and balanced experience to The Conquerors Of The World Tour.
Before their show The Age Of Metal had the chance to speak with Jean-Francois Dagenais guitar player of the band about the tour, Caligvla, the concept, Bloodstock UK and Paganfest Europe 2013, Kataklysm, and the plans for Ex Deo‘s Roman expansion.
