God Forbid – Equilibrium (2012)

God Forbid has been one of those bands, love them or hate them, has been a crucial band in what we know as the New Wave of American Heavy Metal (or NWOAHM). Formed back in the late nineties in East Brunswick, New Jersey God Forbid started out playing shows in their hometown until they got signed with Century Media to release their second full-length Determination. It was on their third album Gone Forever that they broke through and played Ozzfest. In 2012 they have released Equilibrium, their sixth album and by the looks of it have changed things up a bit.

Jonathan Athon of Black Tusk talks to the Age of Metal.

Black Tusk is a band that not many people know of but definitely should. Being from the town of Savannah, Georgia, Black Tusk plays some of the most sludgest metal I have ever heard. I had the chance of seeing them live for the first time ever on Friday March 16th at Chasers Nightclub and boy did they rock the house. Going up against bands such as the godly Intronaut or the band East of the Wall is no easy task but they pulled it off with flying colours.

AtomA – Skylight (2012)

Atoma is quite an odd band. Although all of the members of this band were in former melodeath band Slumber, don’t expect anything like what you got from that band here. The best way to describe the way this band sounds is if Rhapsody of Fire had something awful happen to them and they got depressed and watched sci-fi movies to get over it. In short: serious metal with a modern film score twist, with electronic soundscapes and orchestras to boot.

Sacha Dunable from Intronaut Talks to The Age of Metal

Sacha (Intronaut)

Intronaut is one of those bands I’ve waited literally years to see. I was honestly scared that I would totally miss my opportunity to see them during this album cycle (Valley of Smoke’s been out for two years now). Luckily, they did one last run through the Southwest before holing up to write their next record – and one of those stops was at Chasers Nightclub in Scottsdale, AZ. Needless to say, when they announced the tour, I nearly cried (seriously). Not only do I get to see one of my favorite bands play at such an intimate place, I get to see them headline with Black Tusk (who rule) and East of the Wall (also a band I wanted to see for a long time).

Iron Maiden – En Vivo Blu-Ray (2012)

At the beginning of the year it was announce that Iron Maiden was set to release a new live DVD, and many people thought.”hmmm, another live DVD?…again”. Well yeah, but how many times have you seen a heavy metal band tour around the world on their own customized airplane, and piloted by their lead singer?. Plus you got to see what is going on behind the scenes and the hard work that goes through to make that possible, not many times right.

Wretched – Son Of Perdition (2012)

Wretched is back with and stronger than ever, after their 2010 album Beyond The Gate. Son Of Perdition their new album is a more mature work that shows the growing of the band to a more defining sound. You can see the influences from many genres on this album, from thrash, metalcore, deathcore even a bit of progressive. If in the past the band was compare with bands like The Black Dhalia Murder or The Faceless, well that is now just that the past.

Huntress live at 910 Live Club. Tempe, AZ (03/21/12)

Huntress is a band that has turned heads right and left since the release of their video clip Eight Of Swords last October, and that is include on their upcoming album Spell Eater. But how a band has created so much talk with only a video clip? Well last night that question for me was answer, they rule live and their music is just straight in your face Heavy Metal. Not only Jill Janus singer of Huntress can brought you down to your knees with the spell of her beauty, but also punish you with the power of her voice.

Barren Earth – The Devil’s Resolve (2012)

If I were to tell you that members and ex-members of bands such as Swallow the Sun, Amorphis, Moonsorrow, and Kreator got together to make a band you would think I’m ready to be institutionalized. Well, Barren Earth is exactly that band. Formed in 2007 by Olli-Pekka Laine of Amorphis fame he had some composed songs that didn’t quite fit his other bands so he gathered some of Finland’s elite musicians to create what we now know as Barren Earth. In 2012, after 5 years from it’s inception, they have released their second album The Devil’s Resolve and by the look of it are ready to dominate the metal world.
